Mission, formerly known as Mission City, is a district municipality located on the North Bank of the Fraser River overlooking the City of Abbotsford. The 23rd largest municipality in BC with a growing population of over 38,000 residents, Mission is rich in history going back to the first inhabitants of the region, the Sto:lo, or the People of the River. The city has retained its keen sense of history, which is evident in the heritage buildings of its historic downtown core and hinterland. Recent additions to the historic mosaic include Westminster Abbey, Hatzic Rock and the Fraser River Heritage Park with a soon to come rejuvenation of the Fraser River Waterfront. Forestry, hydroelectricity and agriculture are Mission’s chief resource sectors and provide the basis for varied related retail and service activities. Ideal and untouched forest upland, small floodplains lining the shores and being one of the two communities with municipal tree farms, Mission truly is a nature lover’s haven.
